Here is a list of free antivirus, adware, and spyware tracking software . The Yahoo toolbar claims to deal with spyware. I have not explored further than the top right hand corner of their opening screen.

This site contains an interesting list of phony anti-spyware programs that don't work as advertised, falsely report detected malware to goad you into buying the product, install their own spyware on your computer, or some combination of the above. None of the ones I hear mentioned in CompuSIR are on the list, i.e. Spybot S&D, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Tool, Ads-Gone, Spywareblaster and Ad-watch.

For a good overview of what Jim Dinkey has been preaching for the past year or so, read Know your Enemy:Tracking Botnets - Using honeynets to learn more about Bots. It details how unprotected personal computers (like yours) are subverted to the "Dark Side" and become part of an insidious Botnet that spreads spam, scams and other nastiness, and even your personal information, over the Internet.

There are also additional free add-ins and utilities here.
XP's built-in "Movie Maker" is another nice tool that uses much of the same core technology. It's as capable as many commercial movie-making tools, but offers much higher compression rates. In fact, all the Windows Media audio and video compression rates can be much, much higher than their MPx counterparts. This lets you either pack more AudioVisual content into a given space, or end up with smaller standalone files that are easier to store and share.
