Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

Several Special Interest Groups are co-sponsored by SVCS and SPAUG under the new combined Silicon Valley User Group Alliance (SVUGA). Each meets Monday at the Santa Clara Micro Center from 7 to 9 pm. Please confirm the date and program, and check for any changes on the website before you go - all meetings are subject to change. As of June 2009, the Multimedia SIG meets the first Monday, the WinSIG meets the second Monday, the Web Design SIG meets the fourth Monday; the Digital Imaging SIG is in recess.

The Multimedia SIG meetings are the first Monday at 7:00 pm at Micro Center. Check SVUGA to confirm date, time, location and program of the next meeting. There is an emphasis on how the Internet can augment and complement the PC for multimedia experiences. Audacity, free, open source software for recording and editing sounds, available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems is recommended for recording and editing audio. Refer to the FAQ. The Quick Reference for 1.2.4 is here. The Audacity Wiki is here. Several meetings showed how to use Audacity to record lectures; to transfer from vinyl records to digital files; how to converge you Media Pd with your Home Theater. The SIG will investigate video recording and editing, and other topics relating to multimedia.

Web Design SIG - Fourth Monday of each month. If you are interested in learning about websites and HTML, the Web Design SIG, led by Maury Green, is for you. For more information, visit SVUGA. The emphasis is more on designing and supporting websites for business than for personal sites, but the techniques are similar for both applications. The web creation application Druple is primarily used.

Digital Imaging SIG (DISIG). A Digital Imaging SIG is recommended for those interested in using digital cameras and transferring the photos to their PC for storage, editing or sharing. Details are on the Internet. Please check it out at SVUGA if you're interested in any aspects of digital photography. The SIG covers digital photography, scanning, image editing, image management & printing, including recommendations for hardware and software. The presentation will be of general interest for Wannabes to Newbies to Old Pros.
More information about DISIG can be found at: www.svcs.net/disig/

WinSIG (Windows Special Interest Group - Second Monday of the month

Led by Kevin Lynn, the Windows SIG is for those people interested in the Windows Operating System, and the Hardware and Software used with it.

If any member is interested in organizing and leading a SIG, contact our SPAUG President at . You can also poll member interest at the General Meeting.

If any members would like to suggest a SIG, bring it up at the General Meeting, and try to get an organizer/leader.

SPAUG has run a number of SIGs during the past year or so, and they have been well received. If you have any suggestions, or would like to organize a SIG, we would very much like to hear from you.

Alan has installed many flat screen TVs of many sizes and models; after installation, he can tune the color using a “Spyder”. If you have surround sound installed, he'll tune the audio output to put the “sweet spot” right where you usually sit. If you (or your spouse) want further work to make the system blend in with your room decor, he can help with that, too. [N.B. - disclaimer: Alan Hutchings is the son of Webmaster Stan Hutchings.
